PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
Phase 1: 8 March - 21 March: Foundation Endurance
The emphasis of this initial phase is to build basic aerobic endurance and adapt our physiology to cope with higher levels of fatigue and volume. This phase will consist of the development of both technique and endurance. Training in this phase will not place high levels of stress on the musculoskeletal or physiological systems as the majority of the training will take place at a low intensity below lactate threshold.
Phase 2: 22 March - 18 April: Introduction of Specific Endurance
In this phase, aerobic endurance is still the main component of training, although limited amounts of anaerobic activity will also be introduced into the training programme. For this phase the volume of training will remain elevated whilst intensity is gradually increased.
Phase 3: 19 April - 19 May: Specific Endurance
In the final phase of training before the Bintan Triathlon, specific competition related training will be addressed. Here, intensity of training reaches the appropriate (race specific) level with the associated (and necessary) decrease in volume. Also in this phase, specific race strategies and techniques will also be developed (eg transition work, open water strategies etc). After the necessary levels of endurance have been developed in phases 1 and 2 phases, this 3rd phase will ensure athletes reach their maximum performance potential.
